The beginning ... With critical thinking,

Under the direction and participation of the President of the Syrian Private University, and with the striving of the scientific community in the university to promote the enabling environment for learning and education, to develop the skills of life and enrich scientific research, the first course was held in the philosophy of critical thinking and its foundations in the academic environment on Thursday, 23/5/2019 at the Damascus Center for Research and Studies (MADAD) Academic environment. The president of the university, his deputy, some deans and their deputies, the secretary of the university and some of the directors of the central administration participated in the course. Mr. Hames Zreik, Director of the Medad Center, and Dr. Ansaf Hamad, Head of Cultural Section at the Center, also participated.

The symposium was divided into two main sections: The first was the presentation of practical and philosophical explanations on the concept of critical thinking and its importance in the academic world with its various student, teaching and administrative components, while the second section included a brainstorming session on the topics of the symposium. The University President, Prof. Nazir Ibrahim, initiated the symposium by delivering a lecture on collaborative learning and the importance of critical thinking skills in the academic environment. Dr. Mohammad Tagous, researcher at the Madad Center and lecturer in the philosophy department at Damascus University, presented a detailed and in-depth explanation of critical thinking approaches, tools, and purposes.

The final brainstorming session ramified to the mechanisms of learning critical thinking skills in different specialties, the possibilities of measuring  them, and different approaches to make this skill a key feature of the life of university students, professors, and administrators. Critical thinking is one of the ten globally defined skills as basic skills that a 21st-century graduate must acquire during his or her university life and develop in the course of their studies and after graduation. It is supposed in contemporary higher education institutions to provide the potentials, structures and human resources required to enable the academic community in all its components to acquire and develop these skills continuously.

At the end of the course, the university president stressed that it is the beginning of implementing an integrated program with the Medad Center and that the Syrian Private University is committed to the plan to integrate these basic skills into all aspects of university life, whether academic, professional, social or recreational.

The Syrian Private University channel on YouTube will present a full tape of the symposium and its discussions in the coming days.
